Alright guys, I know you have been reading my articles on the vaping industry updates. Since I have started writing, I have had many people ask me how I quit. So here it is, my personal story. My success story quitting smoking isn’t pretty and it didn’t happen overnight. To be honest, it was the absolute hardest process I have ever taken on. Here is my story.
How I Started SmokingI was 12 years old when I picked up my first cigarette. I remember it like it was yesterday. My cousin offered me a KOOL while we were out hunting in Ohio. Wanting to feel cool, I went ahead and accepted it. Taking in that harsh, cool sensation was quite the experience, as I started coughing up a storm. Funny thing, though, that I kept dragging on it. It got easier and easier with every pull. Before you know it, I was buying cigarettes from strangers wherever I went. It also helped that by the time I was 13, I had a full-grown beard and was 6 feet tall. By the time I was 15, I was smoking over a pack a day. I’m not sure how I kept this up, since I was a very successful high-school athlete, but nothing could stop me from getting my nicotine fix. I had found my favorite cigarettes, Marlboro Blend 27. That beautiful gold and white pack was always in my backpack or in my pocket, as I would sneak off campus to go smoke in-between classes. As I grew older, I began smoking more. By the time I graduated High School, I was smoking almost 3 packs a day! That is when I received a college scholarship for basketball and knew I had to quit or I wouldn’t survive college athletics.
My First Attempt to QuitNow, I was freshly 18 when I walked into my local vape shop. I explained my situation to the counter associate and she was more than happy to help me start my quitting journey! Unfortunately, not much information was truly known about vaping at that time, so within the first week or so, I was hacking up black gunk. I thought I was dying from vaping. I went back to the vape shop and told the associate. She had no idea what could be happening. I put down that e-cig and went and got a fresh pack of 27’s. Immediately, I stopped coughing up the black tar, so I thought smoking was better than vaping. I continued smoking for another 6 months.
Going Back to Cigarettes Didn't HelpThis is where I truly started to feel the effects cigarettes had on my body. I was playing college basketball. This was a whole new level of competition for me, and I couldn’t keep up. I was running short of breath and constantly having to sit out. At that point, I started researching e-cigs and vape pens, and saw some stories just like mine. People coughing up black tar. They stated this was the best thing that could have happened to them! That was all the tar that was coating their lungs and throat being dislodged from their bodies! Could this be the information I needed to help save my body and College athletic career?
